As technology advances and demand for faster payments grows, the Federal Reserve has built FedNow, a real-time payment system for the United States. The FedNow Service lets individuals and businesses, through their banks, send and receive payments instantly, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This article explains what FedNow is, how it works and what it means for banks and businesses.

What is FedNow?

FedNow is an instant payment service created and run by the Federal Reserve. It allows banks and credit unions to send and receive payments in seconds.

With FedNow, a customer of a participating bank can make a payment, such as a mortgage or loan payment, in seconds. Instead of waiting several days for an online payment to clear, or up to a week for a check to be processed, payments can be made right on the due date. Businesses can also receive real-time invoice payments.

When did FedNow launch?

FedNow launched in phases. Before launch, early adopters, including financial institutions, processors and service providers, completed testing and certification and sent test payment messages to one another over the FedLine network.

The service went live on July 20, 2023, with 35 early-adopting banks and credit unions and the US Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Before launch, Nick Stanescu, Senior Vice President and FedNow Business Executive, expected most early use cases to center on account-to-account transfers and bill pay, with payment requests built in from the start.

Adoption has grown steadily since. As of July 2026, more than 1,800 financial institutions were live on the network, and the Federal Reserve has added new fraud mitigation tools.

How does FedNow speed up payments?

FedNow was designed to meet the growing need for real-time payments by offering near-instant clearing and settlement. It removes many of the delays tied to traditional payment methods.

For individuals and businesses, instant payments mean better cash flow management, more financial flexibility and simpler transactions.

Who can use FedNow?

FedNow aims to promote interoperability among financial institutions, so funds can move smoothly across the financial system. The Federal Reserve sees FedNow as a widely available service for participating banks and payment service providers. Broad adoption encourages competition and innovation and supports new payment products and services.

Thousands of banks already use the Federal Reserve’s existing, slower payment services, and FedNow is open to eligible institutions across that network. Participation is voluntary: banks can choose to join, but they are not required to.

What FedNow means for the future of payments

FedNow represents a major step toward faster, more secure and more convenient payments in the United States, in line with the needs of a digital, connected economy. By offering real-time payments around the clock, it helps improve financial transactions, strengthen cash flow management and support economic growth.
