NACHA, originally the National Automated Clearing House Association, writes the operating rules for the ACH network, which moves payments such as direct deposits, bill payments and business-to-business transfers between U.S. bank accounts. This article explains how the NACHA operating rules shape ACH payments and how Same Day ACH speeds up settlement.
NACHA’s goal is a secure, well-organized payment system. The ACH network handles electronic transactions such as recurring payments, direct deposits and retail payments.
Because so many banks and payment providers use the network, a governing body has to set, update and manage the rules for every transaction. Those rules are what keep ACH payments secure and predictable.
With large sums moving in and out of accounts, security has to be strong. Every ACH payment starts with a bank routing number and account number. Both direct ACH payments and indirect payments made through third-party services such as QuickBooks or PayPal are governed by the NACHA rules.
In an ACH direct payment, money is pushed or pulled between a customer’s bank and an organization’s bank. With ACH direct deposit, money can also go to third-party vendors or government agencies. The ACH network processes payments in batches, so many transactions move at the same time.
A standard ACH payment usually settles in a day or two. Payments routed through a third party, such as QuickBooks, take longer because they involve two separate ACH transfers.
First, a NACHA-formatted file instructs the provider’s bank to pull money from the payer’s account into the provider’s account. Then a second set of instructions moves the money from the provider’s bank to the vendor’s bank, which is the final destination. The whole process can take several days. A direct ACH transaction skips the middle step, so it is faster and simpler.
Same Day ACH makes funds available to the receiver on the day the payment is sent. The receiver can track the payment and confirm it arrived the same day.
In 2015, NACHA approved rules that added same-day settlement to a network that had settled only on the next day. That rule created two same-day settlement windows, around 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM EST. A third Same Day ACH processing window was added in March 2021, extending same-day availability by two hours.
The rules also cap the size of each payment. The original limit was $25,000 per transaction. Since March 18, 2022, the per-payment limit has been $1 million for domestic Same Day ACH payments. Larger payments are not rejected; they settle on the next available cycle.
NACHA rule changes have steadily expanded what the ACH network can do. Payments that once took days can now settle within a single day. For businesses that follow the NACHA rules, ACH remains a reliable, low-cost and time-saving way to move money.
